Alma students find neutral buoyancy in freshwater and saltwater for National 4-H STEM Challenge

Mrs. Glander’s 6th grade students at Alma Area Schools used science inquiry methods to engage in the 2022 National 4-H STEM Challenge on October 21, 2022. Students tested their model ocean robot gliders in test tanks of water just like the scientists in the field. Students used scales to weigh the density of their glider and worked to ballast it in the test tank. They used math to find the correct mass of their glider and reach neutral buoyancy in both freshwater and saltwater. The challenge was presented by Buffalo County 4-H Youth Development Educator, Annie Lisowski, who has partnered with local schools the annual critical thinking event for many years.
