Balloon battle bots were the STEM Challenge for Gilmanton 5th and 6th graders

On November 2, fifth and sixth graders in Mr. Close’s and Mr. Lasher’s classrooms at Gilmanton participated a pilot robot engineering challenge from the Division of Extension and Buffalo County 4-H. Students worked to engineer their own battle bots using makerspace materials, iPads, and mini sphero robots. Students used the inquiry design process to test their prototypes and explore how mass, speed, and the center of gravity impacted the successful of their battle bot. The STEM challenge concluded in the battle arena with a competition to see which team’s design worked best at defending their balloon while trying to pop other battle bots’ balloons. The students are looking forward to the earned opportunity to use block coding with the mini spheros next semester with 4-H Youth Development Educator, Annie Lisowski.
