Teen Court peer judges from Buffalo and Pepin Counties are still hearing cases virtually this summer via Zoom! During a virtual hearing, youth panelists listen to the youth offender and their parent/guardian, ask questions to learn more about the offense, and work together to assign sanctions, or consequences. Sanctions provided to teen offenders are designed by the peer judges to restore their image in the community, repair their relationship with the victim, and rethink their actions in order to change behavior. This process is an approach called restorative justice and Buffalo/Pepin County Teen Court youth are trained to employ the method in all their cases.
Teen Court panelists for recent hearings included Amber Kleinschmidt, Maya Jungwirth, Alexandra McMahon and Katherine Thompson. Teen Court Coordinators Annie Lisowski and Marie Ritscher from the Division of Extension support youth panelists during virtual hearings.
