Using robots to develop critical thinking is a theme of STEAM Discovery Days at Cochrane-Fountain City

Coding robots, soapmaking, mechanical hydraulics, printmaking and architecture are just a few of the educational activities that elementary youth were engaged in during the 2022 STEAM Discovery Day at Cochrane-Fountain City School on July 12. In each session youth interacted with different activities to integrate art and science into potential life situations. Youth practiced critical thinking skills and explored the design process through inquiry lessons.  STEAM Discovery Days is a hands-on educational exploration program conducted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension Buffalo County in partnership with Buffalo County 4-H. The event was coordinated by Morgan Guenther, Buffalo County 4-H Youth Development Summer Intern.

Brooke Allemann helps youth to put into their molds before adding a little toy duck.

Three of the youth work together to help guide the Sphero robot through the maze from the iPad.

Students designed and built structures that resembled man made and natural buildings.

One of the youth uses a stencil to make a unique symmetrical design on the sidewalk using chalk.

Two of the youth work together to learn how mechanical robot hydraulics works.
